Ports’ Shutting Down through Organized Strikes
Bensenville, Illinois - Nov 29, 2012
about 70 clerical workers, representing the 800-member International
Longshore and Warehouse Union Local 63 Office Clerical Unit ("OCU"),
managed to shut down seven of eight terminals at the Port of Los
Angeles and three of six terminals at the Port of Long Beach through
organized strikes. These two major ports handle 40% of the nation’s
Initially, Tuesday’s OCU strike was limited to
the APM terminals where Maersk Line calls. An area arbitrator ruled
that OCU was unwilling to bargain fairly and ordered them to return to
work; however, OCU refused the ruling and expanded their strike to
other terminals. OCU’s main dispute is against the threat of workers’
jobs transferring to lower-wage countries through the actions of ocean
shipping lines and terminal operators.
Below carriers and some of their respective terminals are affected:
• APL (APL)
• China Shipping (WBCT)
• CMA CGM
• COSCO (PCT)
• Evergreen Shipping (STS)
• Hamburg Sud
• Hanjin (TTI)
• Hyundai (CUT)
• Horizon Lines
• K Line (ITS)
• Maersk Line (APMT)
• MSC (TTI)
• NYK Lines (YTI)
• OOCL (LBCT)
• US Lines
• Yang Ming (WBCT)
may still call on multiple terminals based on various vessel strings
and slot charter agreements; however, this work stoppage will create
delays and congestion at nearby ports.
