Georgia Ports Authority’s Container Traffic Up 4 Percent

Bensenville, Illinois - May 21, 2013

Georgia Ports Authority reported container traffic in April totaled 258,951 20-foot-equivalent units, increasing 4 percent from April 2012 and rising 11.3 percent from March 2013.

Exports remained dominant, representing 54 percent of loaded volume, the GPA said in a written statement.

Meanwhile, the GPA moved 2.4 million tons of cargo in April, increasing 4.7 percent compared to the same month last year. The year-over-year gain was driven by “strong performance” in containers, bulk and roll-on, roll-off cargo, according to the port authority.

“Our total tonnage makes April the highest volume month on record,” said Curtis Foltz, GPA executive director. “And with companies like Haier appliances, Kent Bicycles and Pep Boys recently choosing the Port of Savannah, our drawing power for cargo is only getting stronger.”

Foltz also reported that four new ship-to-shore cranes are slated to arrive at Garden City Terminal in the second week of June, which will bring the total number of electric-powered STS cranes to 25, of which nine are post-Panamax and 16 are super-post-Panamax.
